TNR
Trap - Neuter - Return
What is it?
Trap–Neuter–Return (TNR) is the humane and effective method of stabilizing community cat populations.
Cats are
- Humanely trapped
- Spayed or neutered
- Vaccinated
- Ear-tipped (a universal sign they’ve been fixed)
- Returned to their outdoor home
Why TNR Matters in Our Community
One unaltered female cat and her offspring can produce hundreds of kittens in just a few years.
In our region, shelters and rescues are overwhelmed during kitten season. Without intervention, the cycle continues:
Unfixed cats → More litters → More suffering → More strain on shelters.
TNR addresses the root of the problem.
Instead of reacting to overpopulation, we prevent it.
By stabilizing colonies, we:
• Reduce kitten intake
• Lower euthanasia rates
• Improve public health
• Reduce taxpayer burden
• Create healthier outdoor cat communities
This is long-term, sustainable animal welfare.
How Our TNR Program Works
River Cities Humane Society for Cats is building a community-based TNR network serving Northeast Louisiana.
Our program includes:
✔ Volunteer trappers
✔ Foster support for kittens young enough to socialize
✔ Partnerships with local veterinarians
✔ Colony tracking and documentation
✔ Community education
When a colony is identified:
- We assess the situation
- Schedule trapping
- Transport cats to spay/neuter appointments
- Return cats safely to their territory
- Monitor ongoing needs
We do not relocate healthy community cats. Relocation is stressful and often unsuccessful.
Stabilization is the goal.
Volunteer for TNR
This program only works because of community involvement.
We are currently seeking:
- Trappers
- Transport volunteers
- Post-surgery recovery monitors
- Data entry & colony trackers
- Community outreach volunteers
Training is provided, so no experience is required. If you care about solving the root of overpopulation, this is where you make real impact.
